Thank you for your interest in Congregation Tifereth Israel. We are pleased to provide you with information about our synagogue and the benefits of membership.
Although our synagogue building is historically significant, we are a modern Conservative congregation. Men and women join together in prayer and participate equally in worship rituals throughout the year. Our full-time spiritual leader conducts weekly Shabbat services at 7:30 Friday evenings, followed by an Oneg Shabbat, and at 9:30 Saturday mornings, after which a modest Kiddush lunch is served. The rabbi presides at all holiday Seders and celebrations and, together with a gifted cantor, conducts a full schedule of High Holiday services.
The rabbi also heads our learning programs for young people and adults, instructs youngsters in Jewish history and Hebrew language, and prepares them for their bar and bat mitzvah celebrations. Members of the North Fork communities often join our members for the rabbi’s classes in Jewish culture and customs.
As a further reach into the community, Congregation Tifereth Israel has adopted the CAST (Community Action in Southold Town) organization as one of its local charities, with members donating food, clothing and their time to help fellow residents in need.
Members of our synagogue and their friends and neighbors also enjoy many social activities that are arranged by the Daughters of Israel (Sisterhood) and the Men’s Club. Luncheons, BBQs, a film series, cooking demonstrations, museum trips, game nights, guest speakers on topics of local interest — these and other secular pursuits keep our members informed and engaged.
The synagogue is governed by a Board of Directors, with its major actions subject to approval by the Congregation. In that way, all members are participants in the operation of the shul. The Shofar, our monthly newsletter, keeps members and friends up to date on all shul activities — spiritual, secular, social and administrative.
We hope that this brief review of Congregation Tifereth Israel will inspire you to visit us. If you have questions, feel free to call the shul at 631-477-0232
Our shul family looks forward to greeting you.
