Chaim Topol, best known for playing Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof,” and known by his surname throughout his acting career, died in Israel on March 9. He was 87.
He began his career as an actor after being assigned to the entertainment troop while serving in the Israeli army. In his career, he won a number of international film awards, including two Golden Globes, one for “Sallah Shabati” and one for “Fiddler.” He was also nominated for an Oscar for his performance as Tevye. Eight years ago, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu awarded Topol the Israeli Prize, the country’s most prestigious recognition in the arts.
