Lunch and Learn What is Sigd?
The Lunch and Learn program on Monday, Nov. 30, promises to be a true learning experience. We will travel to Ethiopia, courtesy of our guest, Kasa Bainesay-Harbor, who will talk about the ancient Jewish holiday of Sigd, which is still celebrated by the Ethiopian Jewish community. Ethiopian Jews, once isolated from other Jewish communities, developed holidays and celebrations related to sacred ritual but unique to their country.
Our guest speaker is the Deputy Consul General at the Israeli Consulate in Miami, FL. Kasa earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations from Hebrew University, and a master’s in public policy from Tel Aviv University. She is fluent in Hebrew, English and Amharic, an Afro-Asiatic language spoken in her home country.
Zoom at noon for a unique Jewish experience.
On Thursday, Dec. 3, Rabbi Gadi will offer the next installment of his fascinating Jewish history series. Join us as we are introduced to Golda Meir and Menachem Begin, who represent opposing camps — Socialist and Conservative – in the Zionist project.
Zoom at noon to focus on two forceful voices in the fight for a Jewish homeland.
Lunch and Learn – Cooking with Deborah
Thanksgiving Tips
Zoom at noon on Monday, Nov. 23, to join Chef Deborah Pittorino of Cuvee at the Greenporter Hotel for Thanksgiving tips to entertain your guests with ease. From creating a menu to setting your table the night before, planning is the first step to a stress-free holiday dinner, the chef says.
Shul member Deborah Pittorino returns to Lunch and Learn by popular demand, following her best-fun-ever “Cooking With Deborah” session earlier this year. For Thanksgiving dinner, Chef Deborah will talk about hors d’oeuvres, dinner and dessert, plus what you’ll need to set up a working bar.
Zoom at noon on Monday, Nov. 23. Gobble-gobble.
Lunch and Learn on Holiday

But be sure to sign into Lunch and Learn in two weeks, on Thursday, Dec. 3, for Rabbi Gadi’s next installment of his Jewish history series, when we will meet Golda Meir and Menachem Begin, who represent opposing camps — Socialist and Conservative — in the Zionist project.
Zoom at noon on Dec. 3.
Happy Thanksgiving from the Lunch and Learn crew.
Lunch And Learn – Jack Weiskott: autumn garden
Zoom at noon on Monday, Nov. 16, for ideas on how to brighten your autumn garden with flowers, fruit and foliage. Join horticulturist Jack Weiskott as he highlights plants that shine in autumn.
Shul members Jack Weiskott and Roberta Garris are the proprietors of Ornamental Plantings Greenhouses on Route 48 in Southold, home to “uncommon plants providing uncommon beauty,” the website says.
Bring your ideas, your questions and your imagination, and chat with Jack.
On Thursday, Nov. 19, Rabbi Gadi will continue his fascinating series on Jewish history, transitioning from Zionism under the influence of Chaim Weizmann to the perspective of David Ben-Gurion, the first prime minister of the State of Israel, who strengthened the new land into a forceful nation.
Be sure to Zoom at noon every Monday and Thursday.
Lunch And Learn – Suzi Rosenstreich: Journalism today, November 9@12PM
Zoom at noon on Monday, Nov. 9, when something new will be happening on Lunch and Learn. Leave it to Suzi Rosenstreich to come up with a solid Lunch and Learn idea to get our “little grey cells” popping. “Let’s have a discussion” Suzi said. “While we’re munching on lunch, let’s chew on a topic that gets us going.” And she came up with a dandy.
There’s journalism, there’s media coverage, there’s reporting. And these days, surely we have plenty to say about how we get the news. From CNN to Fox, from the New York Times to Breitbart, is the medium the message, as Marshall McLuhan famously said back in 1964?
Zoom at noon on Monday, Nov. 9, and join the discussion about what is good and not so good about journalism today. Session moderated by Suzi Rosenstreich.
On Thursday, Nov. 12, Rabbi Gadi will continue his series on Jewish history, transitioning Zionism from the influence of Theodor Herzl to Chaim Weizmann, who ultimately became the first president of Israel.
Be sure to Zoom at noon every Monday and Thursday.
Lunch And Learn with Stephan Brumberg, Monday@Noon
Zoom at noon on Monday, Nov. 2, when Lunch and Learn will introduce shul member Stephan Brumberg, professor of education and history emeritus at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center of CUNY, who will talk about the moving immigrant story of turn-of-the-20th-century Jews and the New York City public schools, and how each affected the other. The story, titled “Going to America, Going to School,” will be told through the words of participants.
On Thursday, Nov. 5, Rabbi Gadi will continue his series on
Jewish history, responding to a request made by many of us in the recent long-range planning survey. In the second installment of the series, the rabbi will discuss Theodor Herzl, the father of modern political Zionism, and the formation of the first Zionist Congress. We will learn how Zionism promoted immigration to Palestine in an effort to create a Jewish state.
Be sure to Zoom at noon every Monday and Thursday.
Lunch and Learn: The Levin Sisters
Hello everyone. Good news. Lunch and Learn is returning.
We have a special treat for you this Monday, Oct. 26. The three Levin sisters — Rachel Levin Murphy, Ellen Levin Wiederlight, and Jody Levin — will provide a rollicking good time for all with stories and adventures about growing up on the North Fork.
On Thursday, Oct. 29, Rabbi Gadi will begin a weekly series on Jewish history, responding to a request made by many of us in the recent long-range planning survey. As the rabbi will explain, Jews live within the larger context of world events. Accordingly, the series will begin with an overview of Jewish periods, looking at Zionism in the last 150 years, then reverting to the first century and a climb back to meet current time — a fascinating journey through time and sacred memories.
Be sure to Zoom at noon every Monday and Thursday.
