The Tikkun Olam Initiative of Congregation Tifereth Israel, Greenport, seeks to address the needs of our community by creating and nurturing relationships with other not for profit organizations to improve the lives of individuals and families living in Southold Town.

Throughout 2021, we have made significant contributions to CAST including school supplies for children, personal care items, fresh produce from individuals and farmers, vegetable plants, poultry, eggs, and winter clothing. Each year we work with Common Ground by adopting two garden beds throughout the spring, summer, and fall  providing fresh vegetables to CAST.

Please call the Synagogue at 631-477-0232 and leave a message for Veronica if you would like more information.

This Friday: Tikkun Olam in Our Community with Sonia Spar

How Can We Do Tikkun Olam in Our Community?
Friday, November 6, 2026 • With Sonia Spar

Dear CTI Members and Friends,

Making the world a better place begins close to home. Join us this Friday for a conversation with community leader Sonia Spar about tikkun olam—repairing the world—and how each of us can make a difference in our own community.

Named the 2026 Champion of Diversity for Suffolk County Legislative District 1, Sonia has helped support survivors of domestic violence, assisted people facing mental health and substance abuse challenges, and advocated for educational outreach. Originally from Colombia, she has called Southold home for two decades.

Come with your questions and ideas as we explore ways to support our neighbors and put our shared values into action. We look forward to an evening of thoughtful conversation and community.

This event and the Oneg are sponsored by CTI Tikkun Olam.

One Barrel Filled—Let’s Keep Going!

Thank you to everyone who has donated school supplies for the children of CAST clients. Thanks to your generosity, one big red barrel has already been filled!

Our collection continues, and we hope you will keep donating. The barrel is located at the top of the ramp outside the synagogue’s kitchen door.

Tikkun Olam Initiative’s Charitable Gardening Overflows

The proof is in the photo by Tom Byrne, who documented the overflowing results of the gardening efforts by the Tikkun Olam Initiative, the shul organization that maintains garden beds at Common Ground. All herbs and produce are contributed to the CAST food bank.

Letter from Butterfly Effect Project Founder and Director

Dear Members of Congregation Tifereth Israel,

On behalf of the Butterfly Effect Project and our Butterfly Action Group, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the Congregation and the synagogue’s Tikkun Olam Initiative for the generous donation in support of our work.

One of the core missions of the BEP is to create courageous conversations that empower young people to think critically, lead compassionately, and move through the world with understanding and respect for the histories, cultural identities and lived experiences of others. We believe deeply in teaching our youth the power of community, respectful dialogue, and the importance of coming together across differences.

Thank you for your belief in the power of young people.

Tikkun Olam Recommends…

The shul’s Tikkun Olam group, whose charitable work for CAST is well known by our members and friends, has learned about a program for parents and grandparents sponsored by PJ Library, a literacy program for Jewish families with young children, reported Veronica Kaliski, chair of the group. This program sends free, age-appropriate Jewish-themed books to children ages 6 months to 8 years.

Included in the expansive PJ Library list of available books is a title by Kalaniot Books, the publishing company owned and headed by Lili Rosenstreich, daughter of shul members Saul and Susan Rosenstreich. The Very Best Sukkah by Shoshana Nambi, illustrated by Moran Yogev is a 2023 winner of a National Jewish Book Award and a Sydney Taylor Book Award. Other Kalaniot titles are being reviewed by PJ Library.  Tikkun Olam suggests that those interested in the program can sign up by visiting www.pjlibrary.org/.
