Prayer for the Welfare and Return of our Kidnapped Brothers and Sisters

God of Israel, rock of Israel and its redeemer, God of mercy, of compassion, in prayer and supplication we plead with you to bring home our loved ones, the kidnapped, who were cruelly torn from their homes and carried off to an enemy land...Father of mercy, be a support for them, protect them and return them speedily to the embrace of their families and their loved ones. Amen. —The Rabbinical Assembly of Israel

Silent Auction Item Reward. The Ladies Did Lunch With Chef Deborah

Patience was rewarded on a pleasant Wednesday afternoon in August, when the ladies who wanted to do lunch with Chef Deborah Pittorino were able to find a convenient date to cash in on their Silent Auction winning bids. The cooks sliced, diced and chopped, grilled and fried and, as a reward, sat down to a splendid repast of vegetable bisque, breaded porgy fillet, roasted corn and avocado salsa, and Jasmine rice, all overseen and hosted [...]

Shul Members Filled The Big Red Barrel To Overflowing — Two Times

These days, it seems as though the Big Red Barrel is as ubiquitous at our shul as a basket of yarmulkas or a stack of prayer books. And just as beneficial to the recipients. As the photo shows, the school supplies drive yielded full barrels of supplies for the children of CAST clients, giving the kids a good start in organizing their pens and pencils and notebooks in readiness for the assignments ahead — and [...]

Veggies And Herbs For CAST Families: Lots Of Work; Satisfying Results

As most shul members know, the Tikkun Olam group at our shul maintains several beds at Treiber Farm, where nonprofit groups can grow veggies and herbs for charitable causes. The collective beds are called Common Ground, and they are sizeable, requiring a lot of helping hands to keep the veggies well and healthy, and the beds weeded and cleaned. Madelyn Rothman is there several days a week, often joined by others active in Tikkun Olam’s [...]

“Soldiers of Love”

On Tu B’Av, the Jewish day of love, I attended a wonderful event honoring Israel Defense Forces soldiers. Shul members Julie Levi and Richard Blau hosted a beautiful dinner for a group of 20 soldiers, who had come from Israel to Fire Island for a week of therapy and relaxation after fighting in Gaza and elsewhere — soldiers who’ve seen many traumatic events, young soldiers who risk their lives to defend the Jewish people. Love [...]

“Inspection And Introspection”

At the time of my growing up years in the small town of Burlington, New Jersey, where synagogue life was an important part of the close-knit Jewish community there, I looked forward every year to the approach of the High Holidays. Not that I claim to have been a pious youngster, but a couple of days free from the rigors of schoolwork, when my non-Jewish friends were conjugating verbs and calculating the areas of circles [...]
