School Supply Drive Runs Through August 18. Let’s Fill The Big Barrel

August 6th, 2025|

Back-to-school for the young set means pencils, glue sticks, paperclips, notebooks, dividers, rulers, scissors, index cards, markers, pens, and the like, plus backpacks to haul all that stuff and — oh yes — schoolbooks and homework assignments.

All those fresh supplies get kids off to a good start in the school year, and the Tikkun Olam Initiative is supporting that effort with a call to our members for donations of school supplies that will be distributed to the children of CAST clients.

CAST has placed a big red barrel on the ramp by the kitchen door at our shul, and we are hoping our members can fill it to overflowing by August 18, the end of the drive.

Adrianne, Miriam And The 2025 Journal Feted At Gala Garden Party

August 6th, 2025|

Morning clouds evaporated on July 20, and glorious sunshine filled the sky for the second annual Garden Party held in Andrew Levin Park. Co-chairs Helaine Teperman and Nancy Torchio were the sterling hosts of the event, welcoming shul members, family and friends of the 2025 Journal honorees, Miriam Gabriel and Adrianne Greenberg, and overseeing every element of the splendid event, from food and drink, music by Ron Rothman and company, seating, and the ceremony saluting the honorees.

Also feted at the event was the 2025 Journal, a beautifully produced publication, which dropped into everyone’s email at 4 p.m., right at the start of the party. Accolades to the team of three, who organized the sponsors, designed, and distributed this year’s Journal: Andrea Blaga, Madelyn Rothman and Judith K. Weiner, with thanks also to the many ad sellers.

Tisha B’Av/Havdalah Observances On Saturday

Tisha B’Av/Havdalah Observances On Saturday

Please plan to join us this Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. to participate in the Tisha B’Av observance, followed by the Havdalah ceremony. A hybrid event.

Tisha B’Av, meaning “the ninth of Av” in Hebrew, is an annual Jewish day of mourning that commemorates the destruction of both the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem.

It’s considered the saddest day on the Jewish calendar. The Book of Lamentations is read.

Havdalah is a Jewish ceremony that marks the end of Shabbat and the start of the new week. It involves blessings over wine, spices, and a special multi-wicked candle, and serves to separate the holy day from the mundane. The ceremony is a sensory experience, engaging sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing.
