Shul News & Notes
Virtual Journal Ads
We are in a time of crisis.
At the same time, we are in a time of renewal and reset. Now more than ever, we need our spiritual home, we need each other, and we need your support.
We invite you to be a part of our new venture: our 2020 VIRTUAL JOURNAL. With your messages of renewal and goodwill, you proclaim loudly that you are here for our synagogue, you are here for our shul family, and you are here for our future together.
In response to our changing world, our journal is moving to an online version that will be “live” on our website, 24/7 for an entire year, and also on Facebook and Instagram. It delivers your messages of congratulations and goodwill for our synagogue on its 119th year, and to Susan Rosenstreich, our synagogue honoree, to a greater audience than ever before.
What a job Suzi has done. With brilliance and unparalleled devotion, she has shepherded Congregation Tifereth Israel through extraordinary times, instituting new educational and social programs, building the social fabric of the Congregation, moving us gracefully to virtual services and programs as we navigate through a pandemic that threatens our own shul family.
Here is the link to the ad form that will speed your congratulations and personal messages to a virtually inexhaustible audience. Please respond generously. You can pay by check, or use this link to our convenient pay-online tab.
The deadline for ads is Friday, July 10.
The 2020 VIRTUAL JOURNAL will go live online in August. Come and be a part of this breakthrough happening.
If you prefer the printed paper, please download your ad form here .

Elizabeth Holtzman To Lead ‘Lunch And Learn’ Session On Monday
The Lunch and Learn program is honored to announce that Elizabeth Holtzman will lead the session on Monday, June 8. Her topic: Recent Political Developments.
Be sure to Zoom at noon for what is certain to be an informative and spirited presentation. Bring your comments and questions.
Elizabeth Holtzman served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from New York’s 16th Congressional District (1973-1980). At age 31, she was the youngest woman elected to Congress, a record she held for 42 years. She was also the first woman to serve as District Attorney of Kings County (1982-1989), and also the first woman to hold the office of New York City Comptroller (1990-1993). Ms. Holtzman is the author of three books, most recently her highly praised account of “The Case For Impeaching Trump.”
Elizabeth Holtzman graduated from Harvard Law School, and magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Radcliffe College. In addition to her law practice, she is a regular TV commentator.
On Thursday, June 11, Rabbi Gadi will continue the political discussion with a topic titled “Political Is Spiritual.”
Join ‘Lunch and Learn’ To Find Out What To Do With All That Hair
Hello, Lunch and Learners. Here’s a preview of what’s on tap for the 7th week of our Zoom at noon program. We hope you were able to Zoom at noon on Monday for a delightful sing-along with Cantor Melissa Berman, who led us in songs, spirituals and rounds to celebrate Memorial Day. On Thursday, Rabbi Gadi followed up with insights into the memorial customs and rituals in Judaism — why we do what we do.
Coming up this Monday, June 1, is a session we’ll call “Hairy Business,” to be led by Ladan Shalom-Murray, a hair stylist, corrective colorist, and founder of the fashionable Paul Izak Salon and Day Spa, who will help us deal with all of that hair. For months, we have been social distancing, sheltering in place, and growing hair. We need help. Ladan to the rescue.
On Thursday, June 4, Rabbi Gadi will follow up on the hair theme with a session titled “From Samson to Absalom.” Samson’s long hair, as we know, endowed him with great strength, whereas Absalom’s bestowed great beauty. What do we learn from that?
Sign into Zoom at 12 o’clock every Monday and Thursday. Have lunch with shul friends, and learn a little, followed by a Q&A and some lively discussion. Visit www.tiferethisraelgreenport.
Why lunch alone? Come eat, come listen, come talk. Don’t forget: Zoom at noon for Lunch and Learn. See you Monday.
Shavuot Celebration
Shavuot is the time when we finish climbing 49 steps from Egypt to Matan Torah—the revelation in Sinai. Imagine climbing 49 steps from the beach to the Bluff. We are out of breath now, and anxious to drink water. The Torah is the water of the Jewish people, the water that washes away our impurity, making us a pure and ready vessel to hold the word of God. All the souls of Israel gathered at the foot of the mountain at the Revelation. This year especially, we should all gather together to hear words of Torah.
