Journal Committee Names Greenberg/Gabriel Honorees Of The Year

June 27th, 2025|

(Last Chance To Place Your Ad Of Congratulations In The Journal…

And To Reserve Your Place For The Gala Catered Garden Party On July 20)

The 2025 Journal Committee is proud to name Adrianne Greenberg and Miriam Gabriel as this year’s Journal honorees. Both women have served our shul with distinction for more than 20 years, contributing in many capacities — from leadership roles to committee members.

Before her election as president of the shul for three consecutive terms, Adrianne held many offices on the Board of Directors over a period of 20 years, including Recording Secretary and Vice President. Currently, she is president of the shul’s Sisterhood, a member of the Ritual Committee, and chair of the Building and Grounds Committee, responsible for the maintenance of the shul and parsonage buildings, the surrounding properties, and Andrew Levin Park adjacent to the synagogue building.

Miriam has served 10 years on the Board of Directors as Recording Secretary and a Member-at-Large. Currently, she is in her 16th year as co-editor of The Shofar, the shul’s award-winning monthly newsletter, and is also a member of the pastoral committee. For many years, Miriam managed the distribution of yahrzeit candles for the shul’s entire membership.

Please join us in celebrating these notable women with your ad of congratulations in the 2025 Journal. Attached to this document is the ad insertion form. Please follow the instructions for submitting your ad copy and payment. You can also pay online by visiting the shul’s website — www.tiferethisraelgreenport.org and clicking on the “Journal” tab.                              SMBloom photo

Mah Jongg Is Coming To The Shul

June 27th, 2025|

At Last, On Thursday, July 31,

Mah Jongg Is Coming To The Shul

Wha-Hoo!

Come Join Us For A Fun Night: The Game,

The Players, And Refreshments, too

No matter how you spell it — Mah Jongg, Mah-Jongg, Mahjong, Mahjongg — it is a game enjoyed by more than 600 million players worldwide. And now, three enterprising devotees of the pastime are bringing it to our shul. Mark your calendars now so you won’t miss out on the fun:

Thursday, July 31, beginning at 7 p.m. in the community room

Shul members Helaine Teperman and Nancy Torchio, joined by Michelle Schwartz, are asking people to sign up, indicating at what level they play so that groups can be formed. (If players have their own group, they should indicate that.) Beginners are welcome as long as they know the basics, the women said. “This is not a night to learn the game, but with interest, teaching will come next,” they said.

Those who have Mah Jongg sets should bring them. Will there be refreshments? Of course. What’s a game night without good snacking?

Come and join fellow Mah Jongg players for a fun night of being together and meeting new players. Please contribute $5 per person to cover expenses. Thanks. See you on the 31st.

Farmer Madelyn Shows Off Successful Crop Of Peppers For CAST

June 27th, 2025|

Madelyn Rothman, who monitors the shul’s two planting beds at Common Ground at Treiber Farm, told The Shofar that the Tikkun Olam group is trying some new efficiency methods this year. The goal is to produce a greater harvest because of increased demand for the vegetables and herbs, she said.

Onions, carrots, cucumbers, zucchini and peppers are the most popular veggies.

The group is always open to more volunteers to help with the garden beds. Those interested can contact the Tikkun Olam group by emailing Veronica Kaliski, coordinator of the group, at ctigreenport@gmail.com with a message for Veronica. Tikkun Olam photo

Book Circle’s Selection Considers J.S. Bach’s Death: Was It Murder?

June 27th, 2025|

Book Circle meets Thursday, July 24, at 3:15 p.m., in the CTI garden.

In 1789, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart visits the grave of Johann Sebastian Bach in Leipzig, looking for a sign, a signal, an answer to an enigma that has haunted him since childhood: Was Bach murdered? Allegro by Ariel Dorfman follows the investigation, from the salons of London to the streets of Paris. Parallel is the rise of Mozart, his fame and his losses.

The Book Circle meets monthly to explore books by Jewish authors writing on topics of Jewish interest. For more information about the Book Circle and its current selection, email ctigreenport@gmail.com with a message for Susan Rosenstreich, coordinator of the group.
