Hanukkah Event Draws Crowd Of Members And Greenport Villagers

February 4th, 2025|

On a clear night in Greenport’s village center, shul members, guests and villagers gathered in Mitchell Park to light the public menorah, sited a few feet from the village Christmas tree as a sign of ecumenism. Rabbi Gadi led the crowd in reciting the blessings before illuminating the menorah on the 5th night of the 8-night observance.

Following the ceremony, all walked two blocks west to the synagogue on Fourth Street for Hanukkah latkes and jelly donuts (foods fried in oil) that remind us of the miracle of the small cruse of oil that burned for eight days.

Music by Ron Rothman, Dave Berson and friends, and lots of socializing capped a fun-filled celebration, chaired by Adrianne Greenberg, with assistance from Sara Bloom, Suri Lan-Brown, Francis DuBois, Roberta Garris, Miriam Gabriel, Paul Jesselsohn, Joanna Paulsen, and Madelyn Rothman. In the park, Hanukkah  candles and Christmas lights lit up the sky throughout the holiday season.

WE ARE FROM HERE
A Family Story of Indigenous Jews

The film follows Rabbi Gadi Capela, a Columbia University student during the October 7 riots, as he shares his family’s exodus from Yemen during Operation On Wings of Eagles. Highlighting the experiences of over a million Middle Eastern Jews, the film challenges the narrative of Jews as foreign colonialists, emphasizing their indigenous roots and enduring connection to the Land of Israel.
Premiered at Columbia on the Day to Mark the Departure and Expulsion of Jews from Arab Countries, the film and discussion also explore the historical
Jewish-Muslim relations.

Standing Room Only At Peconic Landing Menorah Lighting Ceremony

January 2nd, 2025|

Rabbi Gadi led a standing-room-only gathering of Peconic Landing residents to usher in the first night of Hanukkah on Dec. 25. More than 50 members of the facility’s Jewish population plus other interested residents, and even members of our shul who had heard about the event, turned out to be a part of one of the first Hanukkah events in recent memory  to be held at the facility. As a Christmas tree glistened in the background, lending an ecumenical spirit to the ceremony, the gathering in the front lobby recited the three Hebrew blessings, sang traditional Hanukkah songs, and relished the light of flickering candles. The event on Christmas Day, a rare coincidence, was organized by shul member and Peconic Landing resident Judith K. Weiner, who coordinated the publicity, had the dining room provide traditional refreshments, and planned the evening’s program.
