Volunteer Help Needed
Maureen Mooney of St. Agnes Church met recently with Rabbi Gadi to request his help in finding volunteers for John’s Place, a winter homeless shelter at the church. John’s Place provides hot showers, nourishing meals, medical assistance, and warm winter clothing. The shelter operates Tuesday evenings, from November through March or April, depending on the weather. According to the website, “people of all faiths, backgrounds, organizations and various communities come forward to offer their time and talent.”
Those interested in volunteering for this essential program can learn more at https://saintagnesgreenport.org/johns-place or by calling Maureen Mooney at 631-477-9545.
Shul Members Step Up To Prepare Onegs and Kiddush Lunches
The Shofar joins the membership in commending Sisterhood president Adrianne Greenberg for arranging Friday evening Onegs and Saturday Kiddush lunches. To that end, many thanks to August preparers Deborah Pittorino, Jesse and Neville Reese, Tom Byrne and Veronica Kaliski, Miriam Gabriel and Adrianne Greenberg, and Suzi Rosenstreich.
The tasks are simple to perform, and volunteers are needed. Won’t you step up, and sign up? Visit the shul’s website, click on the “oneg and kiddish volunteers” link, and enter your name in any available date. First-timers can download the preparation instructions. Questions? Call the shul at 631-477-0232 and leave a message for Adrianne.
Book Circle To Study New Nathan Englander Novel
The Book circle will meet Wednesday, Sept. 25, at noon, in the shul’s community room to study Kaddish.Com by prize-winning writer Nathan Englander, an intriguing tale of the son who hires a stranger to recite kaddish in order to shepherd his father’s soul safely to rest. Here lies the tension between tradition and modernity.
The Book Circle meets monthly to discuss works by Jewish writers on Jewish themes. For more information, call the shul at 631-477-0232, and leave a message for Suzi Rosenstreich.
